In short
Eastern Cambodia works well for families with school-age children who can walk a few kilometres. The Elephant Valley Project welcomes children (12 and under pay half), the Jahoo gibbon trek has a minimum age of 10, and the Kratie dolphins and Yeak Laom lake suit all ages. The hardest part for children is the long road days, so break them up.
Children often love this part of Cambodia: animals, boats, waterfalls and cool hill evenings. The planning just needs to respect their limits on walking, heat and time in a car.
What works well
- Elephants: the Elephant Valley Project welcomes children, charges those 12 and under half price and lets 3-and-unders in free. The half-day visit involves about 3 to 4 km of walking; the full day 5 to 8 km. Children watch the elephants rather than touch them, which suits curious kids better than you might expect.
- Dolphins at Kratie: a short boat trip, little walking, and real excitement when a dolphin surfaces.
- Water: Bou Sra waterfall and, in Ratanakiri, the Yeak Laom crater lake are favourites. Supervise closely; both have deep water.
- Gibbons: from age 10 only, and best for children who cope with an early start and a long, hot walk.
What to adjust
- Road days: break the journey to Mondulkiri in Kratie, and use a private car so you set the pace.
- Rhythm: alternate active days with easy ones. The eight-day eastern route has a free day built in.
- Comfort: a bungalow resort with a pool in Sen Monorom can make a big difference to family morale.
Things to check before booking

Questions travelers ask
What age is suitable for Mondulkiri?
From around six or seven, children who walk happily can enjoy a half-day sanctuary visit (3 to 4 km) and waterfalls. From 10, they can join the Jahoo gibbon trek. Toddlers can travel there, but most of the highlights involve walking.
How do we cope with the long drive?
Break it. Going via Kratie splits the 359 km from Phnom Penh into two shorter days and adds the dolphins. Hire a private car so you can stop when you need to, and bring snacks, water and something to do.
Is it safe for children?
The main risks are roads, heat, water and insects. Travel in daylight with a careful driver, use car seats or boosters if you bring them, keep children well hydrated, supervise them closely at waterfalls and lakes, and use repellent. Ask a travel clinic about vaccinations.
