Eastern Cambodia in 8 days: Mekong dolphins, gibbons and elephants
An eight-day eastern Cambodia route: Phnom Penh, the dolphins at Kratie, then Mondulkiri for gibbons, elephants and a spare day, with shorter road legs.
Sunset over the Mekong at Kratie
Illustrative itinerary: researched, not a trip we have run
In short
Eight days lets you do eastern Cambodia at a humane pace: Phnom Penh, a night on the Mekong at Kratie with the dolphins, three nights in Sen Monorom for gibbons, elephants and a free day, and a direct drive back. No single road day is longer than about six and a half hours.
The route, stage by stage
This is a researched planning example, not a fixed package and not a trip we have operated. Road times come from published sources and vary with weather and traffic; provider days, availability and prices are confirmed for your dates before anything is booked.
- Day 1
Phnom Penh
Arrive and settle in. Techo International Airport is about 26 km south of the centre. An evening by the riverside.
- Day 2
Phnom Penh to Kratie
About 253 km by car. Afternoon boat at the Kampi dolphin pool, about 16 km north of town, then sunset over the Mekong.
- Day 3
Kratie to Sen Monorom
Morning on the river or Koh Trong island, then about 207 km via Snuol up into the hills. Arrive in Sen Monorom by late afternoon.
- Day 4
Keo Seima gibbon trek
Pre-dawn pickup for the Jahoo day trek with Bunong guides, looking for a habituated gibbon family and douc langurs.
- Day 5
Elephant Valley Project
A day walking with elephants at the observation-only sanctuary (not on a Saturday).
- Day 6
Bou Sra and a free day
Half-day trip to Bou Sra waterfall, about 34 km away, or rest. This is also your weather buffer.
- Day 7
Sen Monorom to Phnom Penh
Direct drive back, about 359 km and six and a half hours by private car.
- Day 8
Phnom Penh
Morning in the city before your onward flight or journey.
- Moving on
Onward travel
Fly out of Techo International Airport on day 8, allowing for the drive from the centre, or continue to Siem Reap, Kampot or the Cardamoms.
Arrange well ahead
- Jahoo trek (one tour per day)
- Elephant Valley Project (payment at least one week ahead)
- Private car for days 2, 3 and 7
Why this route works
The direct road from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom is the main difficulty of any Mondulkiri trip. Going up via Kratie splits it into two easy days and turns one of them into a wildlife afternoon. Coming back, a single direct day is fine because you are heading home rested.
Three nights in Sen Monorom give you the two big wildlife days plus a spare day. That buffer matters: if rain, a late pickup or a full tour date moves one activity, the trip still works.
Choosing the start day
Work back from the elephant sanctuary, which runs most day visits Sunday to Friday. Day 5 must not be a Saturday, so avoid starting on a Tuesday.
Variations
- More comfort: stay at one of Sen Monorom’s bungalow resorts rather than a guesthouse.
- More wildlife: replace day 6 with the sanctuary’s two-day programme or a night at Jahoo’s bamboo camp.
- Longer trip: continue from Phnom Penh to the Cardamoms and Kampot; see Cambodia beyond Angkor.

Questions travelers ask
Can I start this from Siem Reap?
Yes: add a travel day from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh (about 316 km), or go directly from Siem Reap to Kratie (about 326 km). Our 14-day route combines Angkor with this itinerary.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes, with adjustments. The gibbon trek has a minimum age of 10; with younger children, replace it with a half-day sanctuary visit and more waterfall time.
