Mondulkiri or Ratanakiri: which eastern province?
Mondulkiri or Ratanakiri? Distance from Phnom Penh, wildlife, lakes and waterfalls, trekking and comfort side by side, with a clear recommendation.
Yeak Laom crater lake from the air
Researched from published sources
In short
For most first-time visitors, Mondulkiri: it is closer to Phnom Penh (about 359 km against 493 km) and has the best-organised wildlife days, with an observation-only elephant sanctuary and dawn gibbon treks. Choose Ratanakiri for the Yeak Laom crater lake, waterfalls, a more remote feel and as a gateway to Virachey, if you have time.
Both provinces are hill country in Cambodia’s east, with forest, red earth, Indigenous communities and far fewer visitors than the rest of the country. The differences are in distance, what is organised for visitors and how remote you want to feel.

Choose Mondulkiri if
- You want reliable, well-run wildlife days (elephants and gibbons).
- You have 10 days or less in Cambodia, or prefer shorter road legs.
- You are travelling with children.
Choose Ratanakiri if
- Swimming in Yeak Laom and visiting waterfalls appeals more than wildlife tracking.
- You want the more remote end of the country and have two weeks or more.
- You are an experienced trekker interested in Virachey and accept that arrangements there need careful checking.
Our view
For a first trip to the east, Mondulkiri gives more for the travel time. Ratanakiri is a fine second province, or a first choice for travelers who care more about lakes and remoteness than about wildlife encounters. Whichever you choose, a night in Kratie on the way breaks the journey and adds the Mekong dolphins.
Questions travelers ask
Can I visit both Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri?
Yes, with time. The direct road through Koh Nhek is about 182 km, but older reports describe rough, muddy sections and most people split it over two days; current conditions need checking. The reliable alternative goes back via the main highway. Allow at least 12 to 14 days in Cambodia to do both well.
Which is better for families?
Usually Mondulkiri: shorter travel from Phnom Penh, a sanctuary that takes younger children at half price, and a gibbon trek for children 10 and over. Yeak Laom in Ratanakiri is a great swim for families who make the longer journey.
