How many days in Cambodia, and which regions to combine

How many days you need in Cambodia and which regions fit together: realistic combinations for 7, 10, 14 and 21 days, with Phnom Penh as the hub.

In short

Seven days fits Angkor and Phnom Penh, or one of them plus a single other region. Ten days fits Angkor, Phnom Penh and either the south coast or Mondulkiri. Two weeks fits Angkor, Phnom Penh and two of the coast, the Cardamoms or the wild east. The limiting factor is road time: most regions are 3 to 6 hours apart, with Phnom Penh as the hub.

Cambodia is not a large country, but its roads are slow and its highlights are spread out. Plan around a few strong stops rather than trying to see everything, and use Phnom Penh as the hinge between them.

The building blocks

Region Nights to allow From Phnom Penh
Siem Reap and Angkor 3 About 316 km; 5.5 to 6 h by bus, or fly
Phnom Penh 2 (hub)
Kampot and Kep 2 to 3 3 to 4 h by road; train to Kampot
Koh Rong islands 2 to 3 About 2 h to Sihanoukville by expressway, then a boat
The Cardamoms (Chi Phat or the tented camp) 2 to 3 About 195 to 242 km
Kratie (dolphins) 1 About 253 km
Mondulkiri (gibbons and elephants) 3 to 4 About 359 km, or two days via Kratie
Ratanakiri 3+ About 493 km; break the journey

Combinations that work

7 days. Angkor and Phnom Penh. Or Phnom Penh, the Cardamoms and Kampot if you have seen Angkor before.

10 days. Angkor, Phnom Penh and the south coast (Kampot and Kep, or the islands): see the 10-day route. Or Angkor, Phnom Penh and Mondulkiri for wildlife instead of beaches.

14 days. Angkor, Phnom Penh, Kratie and Mondulkiri, then the Cardamoms or Kampot: see Cambodia beyond Angkor in 14 days.

21 days. Room for everything above at an easy pace, or for Ratanakiri as well.

What to leave out

With less than two weeks, choose between the coast and the wild east rather than doing both. Ratanakiri only makes sense with two weeks or more. And skip anything that relies on crossing overland to or from Thailand while those crossings are suspended.

How we help

Tell us your days, where you land and fly out, and what matters most. We suggest a combination, the order and how to travel each leg, and check the days that providers such as the elephant sanctuary or gibbon project run. See how it works.

Questions travelers ask

Is 7 days enough for Cambodia?

Enough for Angkor (three nights) and Phnom Penh (two nights) with travel between, or for Angkor plus a short coast or Cardamoms stay via Phnom Penh. Not enough to add Mondulkiri comfortably.

Is 10 days enough to include Mondulkiri?

Yes, if you combine it with Angkor and skip the coast: three nights in Siem Reap, a night in Phnom Penh, four or five days for Mondulkiri, and back to Phnom Penh.

What is the most common mistake?

Too many stops. Every move costs half a day or more on Cambodian roads; two nights per stop is the minimum that feels like a holiday.
