Getting to Mondulkiri: car, van or via Kratie

How to get from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap to Sen Monorom: private car, shared minivans, breaking the trip in Kratie, and realistic journey times.

National Road 76 from Snuol towards Sen Monorom

Researched from published sources

In short

By road only. Sen Monorom is about 359 km from central Phnom Penh: roughly 6.5 hours by private car, or 6 to 8.5 hours by shared minivan, with delays reported. From Siem Reap it is about 524 km, a very long day. Breaking the trip in Kratie, on the Mekong, splits it into two comfortable halves.

  7. Sen Monorom

There is no shortcut to Mondulkiri. No airport is open in the province, so everyone travels by road from Phnom Penh, Kratie or further afield. The good news is that the road is paved and open all year; the cost is time.

Option 1: private car from Phnom Penh

The simplest and most comfortable choice. A private car covers the 359 km in about six and a half hours, according to a transfer platform’s route data, with stops extra. You choose the departure time, stop for lunch, and arrive at your accommodation rather than a bus office. Because you pay per vehicle, it is good value shared between two to four people.

Agree in writing before you go: the total price per vehicle (fuel and tolls included), the vehicle type, air conditioning and seatbelts, where you will be dropped, and whether there are any stops you want. Leave by 7 or 8 in the morning to arrive in daylight.

Option 2: shared minivan or bus

Several companies run vans and buses from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom, including Kim Seng Express and Vireak Buntham. One timetable listing shows a 06:30 departure taking about eight and a half hours, at around €11 to 13 per seat. They are cheap and frequent enough, but 2025 reviews mention breakdowns, long waits and late arrivals, and luggage space is limited. Book a day or two ahead and confirm the departure point, which is usually the company’s own office.

Option 3: break the journey in Kratie

Kratie, on the Mekong about 253 km from Phnom Penh, is the natural halfway point. Spend the afternoon seeing the Irrawaddy dolphins at Kampi, sleep by the river, and continue the next morning for the remaining 207 km. It costs a day but turns two punishing travel days into four pleasant ones, and adds one of Cambodia’s most distinctive wildlife sights. See Kratie.

From Siem Reap

Sen Monorom is about 524 km from Siem Reap by road. A transfer platform lists about nine hours by private car. Very few travelers do it in one go; it is more sensible to travel via Phnom Penh or Kratie with a night on the way. See Cambodia beyond Angkor.

Arriving by air

Phnom Penh’s airport moved in September 2025. Techo International Airport is about 20 km south of the city, about 26 km by road from the centre, and replaces the old airport near town. If you fly in and head straight for Mondulkiri, you can be collected at Techo and avoid central Phnom Penh, which shortens the day slightly (about 384 km in total). We would still recommend a night in Phnom Penh after a long-haul flight.

Once you are there

Sen Monorom is small. The elephant sanctuary and the Jahoo gibbon project both collect guests from accommodation in town, so you do not need your own vehicle for them. For waterfalls and viewpoints, hire a car and driver for a half day. Details are in Mondulkiri without a motorbike.

Questions travelers ask

How long is the bus from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom?

Published times vary from about 6 to 8.5 hours. One timetable listing shows a 06:30 Kim Seng Express departure taking about 8.5 hours, and 2025 traveler reviews describe late arrivals after breakdowns. Plan for the longer end and do not schedule anything for the afternoon you arrive.

Is a private car worth it?

For most visitors, yes. It is faster, you leave when you want, you can stop for lunch or at a viewpoint, and the driver can drop you at your accommodation. The price is per vehicle, so it becomes good value for two to four people.

Can I go from Siem Reap to Mondulkiri in one day?

It is about 524 km, roughly nine hours by private car according to one transfer platform. It is possible but exhausting. Most people go via Phnom Penh or Kratie with a night on the way.

Is the road safe?

The main risk in Cambodia is road traffic, not the route itself. Travel in daylight, choose a driver who drives carefully and wear a seatbelt where fitted. Avoid arriving late in the evening.
