Short on time: wild Cambodia in a week or less

Only a week in Cambodia but want nature too? What fits in 5 to 7 days, why the Cardamoms are easier than Mondulkiri on a short trip, and the one-wildlife-day compromise.

In short

With a week or less, choose one nature chapter and keep it close to Phnom Penh. The Cardamoms (Chi Phat or Cardamom Tented Camp) fit into three or four days. Mondulkiri needs four days minimum because of two long road days; with only a week and Angkor on the list, it usually means rushing both.

Time, not money, is usually what limits a nature trip in Cambodia. Distances are long, and the regions on this site are reached by road. The trick is to choose one chapter and give it enough room.

Five to seven days in total

  • Phnom Penh plus the Cardamoms: a night in the capital, three nights at Chi Phat or Cardamom Tented Camp, and a final night in Kampot or Phnom Penh. Moderate driving, real rainforest.
  • Phnom Penh plus Mondulkiri: a night in the capital, then the four-day Mondulkiri route with gibbons and elephants. Two long road days, two big wildlife days.
  • Angkor plus the Cardamoms: three nights in Siem Reap, then the Cardamoms via Phnom Penh. Tight in seven days, comfortable in eight.

The compromise worth avoiding

Squeezing Angkor and Mondulkiri into one week leaves no slack for a late van, a rainy morning or a full tour date. If the wildlife days are the priority, give them the time and do Angkor on another trip, or choose the Cardamoms.

Make every day count

Book the fixed-day activities first, put long drives on days that would otherwise be lost to flights or check-outs, and never plan an international flight on the same day as a long road transfer.

Questions travelers ask

Can I see Angkor and Mondulkiri in one week?

Technically, with three nights in Siem Reap and four days for Mondulkiri, but you would spend a large share of the week in vehicles and have no buffer. We would suggest Angkor plus the Cardamoms, or Phnom Penh plus Mondulkiri, instead.

What about a day trip to see wildlife from Phnom Penh?

The places on this site are too far for meaningful day trips. A night or two away is the minimum to make the journey worthwhile.
