Mondulkiri or the Cardamoms: one nature chapter, two options
Mondulkiri or the Cardamom Mountains for your nature days? Distance, wildlife, comfort, seasons and border advice compared, with a clear recommendation.
A river through the Cardamom rainforest, from the air
Researched from published sources
In short
Choose Mondulkiri for the strongest wildlife days (an observation-only elephant sanctuary and wild gibbons) and cooler hills, if you can spare four or five days. Choose the Cardamoms if you want rainforest closer to Phnom Penh that pairs with Kampot or the coast, with a village stay at Chi Phat or a comfortable tented lodge.
Many travelers have room for one nature chapter in a Cambodia trip. These are the two strongest candidates, and they suit different trips.
Side by side
| Mondulkiri | The Cardamoms | |
|---|---|---|
| From Phnom Penh by road | About 359 km to Sen Monorom | About 195 km to Andoung Teuk (Chi Phat), 242 km to the tented camp jetty |
| Last stretch | Road all the way | Boat or motorbike (Chi Phat), boat (tented camp) |
| Wildlife highlights | Elephants at an observation-only sanctuary; habituated wild gibbons | Rainforest and river life; wildlife shyer and harder to see |
| Stays | Guesthouses and bungalow resorts in Sen Monorom | Village homestays and guesthouses (Chi Phat); safari tents (Cardamom Tented Camp) |
| Activities | Elephant walks, gibbon treks, waterfalls | Treks, mountain biking, kayaking, boat trips |
| Climate | Hills at about 800 m, cool nights in the dry season | Lowland rainforest, hot and humid, heavy monsoon |
| Pairs well with | Kratie and the Mekong | Kampot, Kep and the coast |
| Days needed from Phnom Penh | 4 to 5 | 3 to 4 |
Choose Mondulkiri if
- Seeing specific animals (elephants, gibbons) is the point of the trip.
- You can give it four or five days including two long travel days.
- Cooler weather appeals after Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
Choose the Cardamoms if
- You want to be in rainforest with less driving.
- You plan to continue to Kampot or the coast.
- A community stay at Chi Phat or the comfort of a tented lodge appeals more than wildlife tracking.
Our view
If wildlife encounters matter most, Mondulkiri wins clearly. If the shape of your trip runs from Phnom Penh to the south coast, the Cardamoms fit naturally and still deliver real forest. With two weeks, you can do both: Mondulkiri first, then back through Phnom Penh to the Cardamoms and Kampot.
Questions travelers ask
Which is better in the rainy season?
Neither is ideal from June to October. The Cardamoms receive heavier monsoon rain; Mondulkiri’s rain tends to come in the afternoon. In both, add a spare day and expect muddy paths.
Is the Thai border advice a reason to avoid the Cardamoms?
Not for Chi Phat or the tented camp area, which are about 75 and 46 km from the border by our approximate check, outside the 20 km zone. It is a reason to avoid Koh Kong town and the border crossing. Check the latest official advice.
