What a trip to eastern Cambodia costs
What a trip to Mondulkiri or the Cardamoms costs: published prices for the elephant sanctuary, gibbon treks and eco-lodges, and what moves the total.
Hill country between Keo Seima and Sen Monorom
Researched from published sources
In short
The activities themselves are modest by international standards: a full day at the Elephant Valley Project is US$100 and a Jahoo gibbon trek US$185, both including transport from Sen Monorom and lunch. The biggest cost variables are private transport from Phnom Penh, the comfort of your accommodation and how many days you spend on the road.
There is no meaningful “average price” for a trip like this, because the cost depends on a few big choices. This page sets out the published prices we can source and the decisions that move the total.
Published activity prices
The wildlife and forest experiences publish their own prices (shown below with the date we read them). They are good value for what they include, and most include transport from Sen Monorom and a meal. Prices are per person unless stated.
What moves the total
Transport on the long legs. The road from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom is about 359 km each way. A shared van seat costs around €11 to 13 according to one timetable listing; a private car is quoted per vehicle and costs considerably more, but is faster, more comfortable and better value shared between three or four people.
Accommodation. Sen Monorom and Banlung have simple guesthouses and a small number of more comfortable bungalow resorts. Chi Phat offers homestays and simple guesthouses; Cardamom Tented Camp is an all-inclusive package. Comfort level is the second big variable.
Days on the road. Each extra night (for example, breaking the journey in Kratie) adds accommodation and meals but reduces the strain of the trip. It is usually money well spent.
Group size. Private transport and guides are priced per vehicle or per group, so costs per person fall noticeably for three or four travelers.
What a proper quote includes
Whoever you book with, a quote should show one total price and what it includes: transport, accommodation, activities, entrance and conservation fees, meals and guides. It should also name who provides each part and show each provider’s payment and cancellation terms before you pay. That is what our written proposals contain.
What the providers publish
These are the facts each provider states on its own website, with the date we read them. Naming a provider here describes it; it is not an endorsement or a partnership.
